Network address translation is a feature on gateway devices that translates private IP addresses used in an enterprise to one or more public internet routable addresses for any outbound connections to the internet. The three types of NAT translations are static, dynamic (one-to-one translation) or port address translation (PAT) which translates multiple internal private addresses to a single public address using multiple layer-4 port numbers to differentiate between each connection.

Advantages of NAT include:

-  Can hide internal address structure of the network

-  Less public IP addresses need to be acquired

-  Permits use of private IP addressing in the internal network

c) Discuss how OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) operates and the advantages of that approach. Would this protocol work for a small network with only a handful of networking devices?

3. a) Explain how the two TCP/IP transport layer protocols (TCP and UDP) are employed in the context of VoIP telephony. (5 marks)  

b)  Which layers of the ISO/OSI does the Frame Relay protocol operate on and would it be a better choice than X.25 if we wanted reliable data transmission over unreliable noisy analogue lines? (5 marks)

c)  Explain the SMDS credit management scheme and its purpose. (5 marks)

d)  Briefly explain what the terms “line”, “section” and “path” mean in the context of SONET technology. Draw a diagram to illustrate how they relate to each other. (5 marks)

e)  Extended Unique Identifier (EUI), allows a host to assign itself a unique 64-Bit IPv6 interface identifier (EUI-64). Briefly explain what steps are involved in the generation of an EUI-64 on an interface and write down a possible IPv6 address that you could get from the MAC address 00:00:AB:CD:11:11  (5 marks)

 

4. a) Briefly explain asymmetric switches and provide four examples of problems they would be ideal to address. (5 marks)

b) Briefly explain how switches can be used to introduce redundancy to your network design and how can loops be avoided. (5 marks)

c) Explain what is meant by the term vLAN and discuss the advantages of employing such a technology. (5 marks)

d) Membership to vLANs can be either static or dynamic. Briefly explain what is meant by each of these terms and then compare and contrast the two methods – what are their advantages and disadvantages? (10 marks)

 

5. a) Answer the following questions regarding the network and ACL shown:

  1. Is this ACL standard or extended? (1 mark)
  2. What is the intended purpose of the ACL? (1 mark)
  3. Which device/port and which direction does it need to be applied to? (2 mark)
  4. Would host 10.1.1.1 be able to ping host  10.2.2.2? (1 mark)

b) Briefly compare “open network” versus “closed network” approaches in the context of securing a network. What are their advantages and disadvantages? (5 marks)

c) Briefly discuss why we need security policies. (5 marks)

d) VLAN membership can be static or dynamic. Discuss the implications (and possible problems) of each of these options in terms of security. (10 marks)

 

6. a) Briefly discuss the strategies that can be deployed in order to avoid risk, providing an example for each strategy presented. (5 marks)

b) Explain the differences between bottom up and top down approaches to network troubleshooting. What approach would you take in order to solve a problem assuming you have no idea regarding its cause? (5 marks)

c) Briefly explain the difference between the push and pull methods employed by SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). (5 marks)

d) You are in the process of identifying the risks for a financial company located in a two-storey building in the coastline of Florida in the USA. Produce an impact/probably chart and briefly discuss your assumptions and the main issues/risks identified (and why they matter). (10 marks)
